Choosing Therapy
We can become accustomed to feeling overwhelmed—white-knuckling it through stressful patches that become stressful years, or pushing unresolved pain to a future moment when we have the capacity to turn to it.
The question is whether we must.
The idea of starting therapy can be daunting. You might be thinking about your already full plate or the prospect of emotional upheaval. But therapy takes many forms and can and should proceed at a pace that suits your circumstances and your stage of life.
For some people this is ongoing maintenance, a valued part of their routine like workouts. For others, therapy is something they reach for in a moment of intense difficulty—loss, trauma, stress—and end when they feel they have moved through the moment and acquired the tools they need to navigate future difficulties.
I do not apply a framework to prospective clients. I learn more about what is hoped for and adapt my approach to the client’s circumstances and wishes.
Psychotherapy with Katherine Wheelock
About Me
I am an integrative psychotherapist who has trained in the U.K. and the U.S. My London-based training was rooted in humanistic, existential and psychodynamic approaches, a blend that emphasises the working relationship between therapist and client, the client’s agency and self-knowledge, and curiosity about relational patterns—how some ways serve us and others get in our way. My U.S. training was in clinical social work, a discipline that centers a relational, client-led approach to counseling. I also have advanced training in perinatal mental health, which is a particular area of interest. I love working with adolescents aged 15 and up, young adults as well as adults of all ages, and couples.
As therapy is a second career for me, I bring the experience of a previous professional life in writing and editing to my work, as well as the influence of my role as a parent of three young children. I grew up in Massachusetts, lived in New York City for many years, and have recently and happily returned to London where I lived for four years previously. I am committed to being as authentic and transparent with clients as possible. I like to normalise, to explore the origins of recurrent thoughts and behaviors with curiosity and empathy, and to make space for humor and lightness. Understanding and self-compassion are crucial to shifting what needs shifting and to enacting change. I believe that good therapy can support this.
