At times our lives throw up challenges, unexpected events, relationship difficulties, and resurfacing memories. Counselling and psychotherapy can offer a thoughtful, non-judgmental space in which to explore difficulties, both past and present.
I work openly and collaboratively, tailoring my approach to suit individual issues and personalities. Counselling relationships are attentive, supportive, and can be gently challenging. This can help clients to gain a greater sense of security within themselves, enabling them to make decisions based on their own desires and values. Counselling is not a gateway to instant happiness, but can lead to a greater capacity to understand oneself and others, and to become more forgiving of both.
Therapy and Counselling with Helen Robertson
I am an experienced psychotherapist registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and I follow their ethical codes. I see clients for short or long term psychotherapy for a range of issues. Short term contracts are good for focused work on a particular issue. Longer term work is more appropriate for complex problems, with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully.
I believe that counselling provides the opportunity to:
- Gain perspective on, and reframe troublesome issues
- Explore emotions in a safe, supportive environment
- Become more aware of unhelpful thoughts and repeating patterns of behaviour
- Talk openly without worrying about the thoughts or feelings of the listener
- Formulate new ways of responding to difficult situations
- Gain awareness of how you are in relationships with others
I have particular interest and experience in working with people following bereavement and loss. I currently work for the bereavement service at St Joseph’s hospice in Hackney; previously I worked for Camden bereavement service.
I have worked extensively with people going through fertility treatments or dealing with issues relating to childlessness. I have a good knowledge of the technical aspects of IVF, and the associated emotional challenges. I also see people who express ambivalence about the idea of parenthood, for whom there might be some confusion about the impact of societal norms upon their decision making process.
Areas I work with
I work with a broad range of presenting problems including:
- Stress related issues
- Relationship difficulties
- Anxiety and panic
- Issues related to fertility
- Bereavement and loss

- LGBTQ+ issues
- Health related anxiety
I am happy to discuss any particular query by email.
During the first session I ask questions and take notes in order to assess how I can help. If we both think it would be helpful to proceed then we make a contract for a set number of sessions, or agree to open ended work with regular reviews.
