Couple and individual psychotherapist
I am an experienced couple therapist helping couples and individuals improve the quality of their relationships. Our intimate relationships play a key role in our physical and emotional wellbeing. Conflict and difficulties inevitably arise, but it is how they are managed and worked through that distinguishes healthy and meaningful relationships from those that leave us feeling isolated and stuck.
I offer a therapeutic space for clients to bring their difficulties so we can think about them in a calm and neutral atmosphere that allows for the understanding and development of more healthy and sustaining relationships.
Couple and Individual Therapy with April Joyce
Couples and individuals seek relationship therapy for many reasons
- Communication difficulties
- Recurring arguments
- Fears around connection and trust
- Lack of sexual intimacy
- Jealousy and anxiety
- Cultural differences
- Life-stage changes – becoming parents, ‘empty nest syndrome’, job loss, retirement
- Bereavement – the loss of a partner, parent or a child
- Dealing with an affair
- Divorce and separation
- To make sense of a relationship ending
- Developing ways to create more meaningful relationship as one individually moves ahead
How I work
My approach is psychodynamic, which involves exploring what lies beneath the surface of one’s thoughts, feelings and patterns of behaviour – ways of being – that may contribute to one’s difficulties. These may link to earlier experiences, perhaps family or previous partnerships. Making sense of how the past unconsciously plays out in the present, enables the making of different, healthier choices that bring about positive change.
Who I work with
I see couples and individuals from a diverse range of racial and cultural backgrounds, straight and gay.
Training and experience:
I completed my training at Tavistock Relationships, pioneers in the field of relationship therapy, where I continue working as a Senior Visiting Clinician and Assessor. I am also a Trainer and Supervisor for the Couple Therapy for Depression training within the NHS IAPT service and hold a certificate from the Foundation of Infant Loss.
How we will work
I offer sessions both short and longer-term, in-person and online via Zoom. To begin, we will meet for an initial consultation with a view to considering how we might proceed and for clients to have an experience of working with me. Consultations are usually 90 minutes and ongoing sessions 50 minutes weekly.
Contact:
Please email me to arrange an initial consultation. I am happy to arrange a brief phone call to discuss any concerns or questions you may have about the therapy process.
